What makes camel riding special?
The Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus), also known as the two-humped camel, is a true desert animal and lives up to its name as the "ship of the desert." Its home is the Gobi Desert, which lies across the Atlantic. Camels are ambling animals, meaning they move their right and left legs alternately. For example, while the right hind leg and right foreleg land simultaneously or almost simultaneously and bear the weight, the opposite pair of legs (left) is in the air and swings forward. This results in the rather rocking motion of camel riding.
It is important to us that the rider uses a mounting block to get onto the camel. We lead inexperienced riders during camel rides, while experienced riders can ride the camel alone. Camels also have three gaits: walk, trot, and canter, and the canter can be quite comfortable thanks to the pace.

The course of the camel encounter
- Meeting point: Lama Oasis in Holzland (Upper Bavaria)
- Introduction: Safety, animal behavior, seating position
- Getting to know the animals in their own enclosure, being led to the grooming area, brushing and cleaning them
- Staying in the round pen
- Either the event concludes with horseback riding (guided or solo, depending on prior experience) or a joint hike through the wooded area.
- Conclusion: shared discussion, photos, drinks if desired.
